Ukraine Replaces Frontline Sentries With Low-Cost Perimeter Surveillance System

Engineers from Ukraine’s military intelligence have developed a low-cost surveillance system that allows troops to monitor frontline positions remotely without exposing personnel outside fortified shelters.

The system, named Perimeter, was presented by Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate on August 2. It was developed by engineers from the Wings unmanned systems unit within the agency’s Active Operations Department.

Perimeter is a multispectral sector-surveillance system consisting of a remotely operated camera mounted on a two-axis platform, a controller with a display, cables, and rechargeable batteries.

The system can be equipped with a daytime or low-light camera capable of showing the outlines of objects after sunset, as well as an infrared camera for detecting heat signatures.

“There is a daytime or day-to-dusk camera. Even when there is no light, it can still see quite well and show outlines after the sun has set,” said a Wings unit engineer with the call sign Osaka. “There is also an infrared camera—a thermal imager—for observing warm targets.”

According to Osaka, the system was designed in response to recommendations from troops operating at observation posts. Before its introduction, soldiers often had to remain outside shelters and visually monitor approaches to their positions.

“We tried to make everything as simple, inexpensive, and interchangeable as possible, literally using what is available at the nearest electronics market,” Osaka said.

The remotely operated camera allows personnel to observe the surrounding area from inside a dugout, reducing the likelihood that soldiers will reveal their location or be detected by Russian reconnaissance systems.

The camera itself produces a limited thermal signature and can be difficult to distinguish from surrounding vegetation or tree bark through a thermal imager, particularly during periods of dense foliage.

Perimeter is weather-sealed and can operate for at least 24 hours using two batteries. The batteries are placed inside the shelter, while the camera can remain mounted outside for extended periods.

“If the camera has been installed, it can remain there for months, and no one needs to approach it,” Osaka said.

The current version provides a live video feed but does not record footage. Developers excluded the recording function to keep the system inexpensive and simple to manufacture and maintain.

According to the Wings engineer, one Perimeter system costs approximately $1,450, based on the current value of 60,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. The camera accounts for roughly half of that amount, while two batteries cost around $240.

Earlier, a European-made visual navigation module designed to guide drones without relying solely on satellite signals completed more than 3,000 kilometers of flight testing in Ukraine, including autonomous missions exceeding 50 kilometers.
