Ukraine Requests to Purchase Patriot Missiles Using Funds From EU Loan

Ukraine has officially requested permission from the European Commission to purchase Patriot interceptor missiles using funds from a €90 billion ($98 billion) loan provided by the European Union, according to Suspilne on September 1.
Ukraine is asking for over €2 billion ($2.18 billion) to purchase these missiles.

The European Commission previously received a list of military equipment from Ukraine detailing plans for the bulk of the remaining €6 billion ($6.54 billion) in the defense portion of the loan.
Most of those requested items involve equipment produced in Ukraine and the EU, primarily drones.
The request to purchase Patriot air defense missiles is a key element in Ukraine's plans to strengthen air defense and protect critical infrastructure amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is seeking 300 additional Patriot interceptor missiles for the winter as it works to strengthen its air and missile defenses.
According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s Air Force has requested 360 Patriot missiles, but securing that quantity remains difficult given annual production levels.
Kyiv is therefore working with partner countries to identify additional supplies and hopes the United States could provide a small share of its existing stockpile.
On August 24, the European Commission approved a €6.1 billion ($7.1 billion) defense support package for Ukraine to fund air defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the assistance was intended to help Ukraine protect its people and airspace amid intensifying Russian aerial attacks.
EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius noted that Ukraine had faced 376 missile strikes in the previous month alone, adding that the funds were provided through the EU's broader €90 billion ($105 billion) Ukraine Support Loan.
