Ukraine Tests High-Altitude Balloon Launch to Double Drone Strike Range, Video

Ukrainian forces have tested an aerial tactic by launching a Hornet strike drone from a high-altitude tethered aerostat, an approach that could potentially double the weapon’s effective range, Defence Blog reported on May 21, 2026.
The recent test involved lifting the Hornet drone, manufactured by Perennial Autonomy, to an altitude of approximately eight kilometers. The balloon carried the unmanned aerial vehicle 42 kilometers away from its ground launch point before dropping it to initiate its powered flight, according to Defence Blog.

This elevated launch method eliminates the need for drones to drain battery power during takeoff and initial altitude climb, a tactic increasingly utilized by Ukrainian forces for both FPV and mid-strike systems, according to Under Fire News.
During the Hornet’s transit phase on the aerostat, the drone consumed only 5 percent of its battery capacity, preserving nearly its entire energy reserve for the primary strike mission.

By bypassing the energy-intensive ground catapult launch, Ukrainian operators estimate the tactic could expand the Hornet’s operational reach from roughly 150 kilometers to approximately 300 kilometers. While this adapted deployment offers significant potential to upgrade deep-strike capabilities, the expanded range figures have yet to be independently verified, Defence Blog noted.
The high-altitude launch tactic builds on previous Ukrainian efforts to adapt tethered platforms for combat, including aerostat-based systems developed to launch FPV interceptors against Russian Shahed drones.
