Ukraine’s FP-1 Drones Hit Major Russian Oil Refinery More Than 700 Km From Border

Ukrainian forces struck the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Russia’s Yaroslavl overnight on August 28, with fires reported at the facility following a drone attack.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces carried out the strike using FP-1 drones, Ukrainian defense company Fire Point reported on August 28.

OSINT analysts from ASTRA geolocated eyewitness footage and identified the site of the fire as the Slavneft-YANOS refinery. According to the outlet, videos filmed from Yaroslavl’s Dyadkovo district appeared to show two separate fires burning on the refinery grounds.

Yaroslavl regional governor Mikhail Yevrayev had earlier warned residents of a drone threat in the region. In the aftermath of the attack, traffic toward Moscow was temporarily restricted, while several public transport routes in Yaroslavl were adjusted.

Later, Yevrayev said that one person had been killed and 27 others injured in the attack, according to ASTRA.

Authorities also closed two kindergartens in the city due to the need to address the consequences of the drone attack.

Slavneft-YANOS is the largest oil-processing facility in Russia’s Central Federal District, with an annual refining capacity of up to 15 million metric tons of crude oil. Located more than 700 kilometers from Ukraine’s state border, the refinery produces various petroleum products, including gasoline, jet fuel, and lubricants.

The refinery supplies products to major industrial enterprises across Russia’s Central and Northwestern regions. Its customers also include airports, the Northern Railway administration, and facilities linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex.

Several days earlier, Russian oil giant Lukoil has suspended crude processing and petroleum product output at its Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez (NORSI) refinery after a fire triggered by an August 26 drone strike.
