Ukraine’s New Firefly Drone Munition Ready for Mass Production to Strike From 800-Meter Altitude

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has completed the development and testing of a new class of precision-guided munitions named “Firefly,” which is now ready for large-scale serial production, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported on July 20.

The newly developed munition operates effectively at deployment altitudes of up to 800 meters, enabling strike platforms to engage hostile forces from a secure standoff distance.

Once released from a carrier aircraft, the Firefly system autonomously computes its flight trajectory and continuously adjusts its course toward the target. According to the defense ministry, the munition retains high striking precision even when operating under heavy interference from enemy electronic warfare systems, making it a critical asset for neutralizing fortified enemy positions, bunkers, and dugouts.

The ministry noted that the transition to mass manufacturing is facilitated by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine’s Resolution No. 1310, enacted on October 13, 2025. This regulatory framework grants defense officials the authority to transfer technology usage rights directly to private sector defense enterprises.

Consequently, independent manufacturers and innovators within the Brave1 defense technology cluster are being encouraged to integrate the Firefly design into their active production lines to rapidly scale up supply for the frontline.

The ministry confirmed that over 90% of these newly adopted systems were manufactured within Ukraine, including more than 200 distinct types of advanced ammunition designed to diversify the country’s military capabilities.

The integration of private manufacturers to scale new military technology comes as defense officials emphasized that Ukraine’s domestic industry possesses the latent capacity to produce up to 20 million drones annually and thousands of deep-strike missiles if backed by sufficient international financing.
