Ukrainian Naval Drone Hits NEFRIT, Russian Ship Supporting Offshore Oil and Gas Operation

Ukraine’s Navy struck the Russian support vessel NEFRIT with an unmanned surface vessel in the port of Sochi, the service stated on September 3.

The Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine published footage of the operation, saying a powerful explosion and smoke were recorded near the vessel. According to the Navy, the Russian-flagged multipurpose support ship was hit by one of its naval drones.

“Even the Russian rear is not a safe harbor,” the Navy said.

NEFRIT was described as part of Russia’s maritime and energy infrastructure, supporting oil and gas operations, servicing offshore facilities, transporting cargo and personnel, and carrying out underwater technical work.

The Ukrainian Navy said those activities directly supported Russia’s war economy and helped finance its aggression against Ukraine.

According to the service, the strike damaged Russian logistics, specialized maritime capabilities, and military-economic infrastructure.

The Navy said it would continue targeting resources and capabilities used by Russia to sustain its war against Ukraine.

Previously, on July 24, the Ukrainian Navy received NATO-certified authority to command multinational mine countermeasure forces after completing a NATO Evaluation Level 2 assessment during the Sea Breeze 2026 exercises.

The certification allows Ukraine’s mine warfare headquarters to independently plan and conduct operations under NATO standards and command allied forces assigned to it.
