Ukrainian Drones Strike Russia’s $60 Million Kasta-2E2 Radar in Zaporizhzhia

Ukrainian drones struck a Russian Kasta-2E2 radar station in the Zaporizhzhia region, with the hit confirmed through objective monitoring, Ukraine’s General Staff reported.
According to the General Staff, the strike took place on September 1 near the settlement of Vyshneve in the Zaporizhzhia region.

Ukrainian drones struck both the radar’s antenna and the equipment station of the vehicle operating the Russian system. The General Staff did not provide further details on the extent of the damage.
The Kasta-2E2, also designated 39N6, is a Russian mobile three-coordinate radar system designed to detect and track aerial targets flying at low and extremely low altitudes. The system determines the coordinates of detected targets and transmits the data to air defense command posts.
The radar is capable of detecting aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, including targets operating at very low altitudes. Its detection range extends from approximately 5 to 150 kilometers (3 to 93 miles), while its altitude coverage reaches up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).

A small drone flying at an altitude of around 60 meters can reportedly be detected by the Kasta-2E2 from a distance of approximately 30 to 44 kilometers (19 to 27 miles), depending on the height of the radar’s antenna mast, which can be raised to as high as 50 meters.
Depending on its configuration, the estimated cost of a Kasta-2E2 radar system starts at approximately $60 million.
Ukraine’s General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces targeted multiple Russian military sites in the occupied Donetsk region and Russia’s Bryansk region on September 1 and overnight into September 2. The military also confirmed that earlier operations had destroyed a Russian MiG-29 fighter jet and a Ka-27 helicopter.
