All 100 US Senators Invited to Capitol Meeting With Zelenskyy

All 100 US senators have been invited to an all-hands meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the US Capitol on the evening of July 28, The Hill reported on July 27.
The gathering comes as the Senate considers legislation to impose harsher sanctions on Russia and its trading partners in response to Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to The Hill, US President Donald Trump has backed the proposed sanctions package while requesting that lawmakers expand its scope to include additional restrictions on Iran and Hezbollah.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington coincides with the memorial service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a lead author of the sanctions bill and a prominent advocate for Ukrainian defense efforts in Congress. Graham, who met with Zelenskyy in Kyiv on July 10 during one of his final official overseas trips, played a central role in driving bipartisan backing for Kyiv on Capitol Hill, the outlet reported.

The scheduled meeting with the full Senate follows months of smaller bipartisan discussions between American lawmakers and Ukrainian officials, including engagements at the Munich Security Conference in February and during previous visits to Washington.
In addition to his session with senators at the Capitol, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet directly with President Trump, according to The Hill.
Senator Lindsey Graham’s legislation had previously secured more than 60 co-sponsors in the Senate, providing the necessary supermajority to bypass a filibuster and force a floor vote.
