EU to Consider New Sanctions Over Forced Deportation of Ukrainian Children

The European Union is considering new sanctions targeting Russian individuals and organizations involved in the forced deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children, Deutsche Welle (DW) reported on September 1, citing diplomatic sources in Brussels.
The EU’s Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper II) will discuss the proposed measures during a meeting on Wednesday, September 2, DW wrote.

The new restrictive measures are designed to build upon an initial sanctions package adopted in May, which targeted 16 Russian officials and seven entities responsible for the systematic deportation, indoctrination, and illegal adoption of Ukrainian minors.
According to DW, the timing of the new penalties is aligned with preparations for the Second International Conference on the Return of Ukrainian Children, Civil Detainees, and Prisoners of War, co-hosted by Canada, Ukraine, and Norway in Toronto on September 28–29.

During the same session, EU ambassadors are also expected to support extending existing individual sanctions for another six months, Deutsche Welle reported. EU sanctions against Russia target individuals and entities responsible for undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence, and were last renewed until September 15, 2026.
Meanwhile, the bipartisan “sanctions from hell” bill targeting Russia’s foreign trade partners has stalled in the US House of Representatives. Despite passing the Senate in an 86–11 vote, the legislation was left off the House voting schedule due to Democratic opposition over expanding executive tariff powers and internal Republican disputes over legislative priorities.
