Germany Orders 149 Rheinmetall Mobile Medical Units Tested on Ukraine’s Frontlines

The German military procurement office BAAINBw has tasked Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH with delivering 149 mobile medical aid stations under a framework contract signed in December 2024.

Out of the 149 stabilization points ordered, 112 units will feature ballistic armor protection, while the rest will be delivered without protection, according to HartPunkt on August 3.

Ukraine has been using these mobile complexes since September 2023, following a June 2023 order placed with Rheinmetall for 2 field surgical stations.

Each mobile medical unit consists of 2 containers, a connecting component, and a dedicated transport system.

The newly procured stabilization points form part of the broader Modular Medical Facilities (MSE) project.

They also represent the 1st level of NATO's Deployment Health Surveillance (DHS) program, which focuses on providing emergency surgery and primary care directly at these facilities.

According to a statement from BAAINBw, "The new stations will be the first point of contact for wounded soldiers. The assistance provided there is decisive for saving lives, as shown by the current war in Ukraine."

All required medical equipment is stored and transported within the rescue stations. The mobile medical complex and its assigned staff can be quickly moved, assembled, and put into operation in the field, allowing medical personnel to directly follow combat forces.

On April 10, 2026, the German Military Attaché officially handed over five MEDIGUARD armored medical vehicles to the National Guard of Ukraine. The German Embassy in Ukraine announced the delivery, noting that it was the first group of vehicles provided under a new and larger contract fully funded by the German government.

This delivery followed a previous batch of armored ambulances sent in October 2025, which were used on the front lines to evacuate wounded soldiers.

The new MEDIGUARD models were built using feedback from Ukrainian soldiers and their experiences during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, featuring anti-drone grids for protection against FPV drones, with medical equipment and armor manufactured in Germany and final assembly taking place in Ukraine.
