Germany’s Far-Right AfD Calls Trump’s Russian Diesel Deal “Pragmatic” and Pushes for Its Own

Alice Weidel, co-leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has called for Germany to pursue its own diesel deal with Russia, ariva.de reported on October 15.
She presented US President Donald Trump’s recent agreement with Moscow as a model.

“We also want a diesel deal for Germans, for our country, for Germany. And for that we have to sit down at the table,” Weidel told journalists in Berlin, according to ariva.de.
Ahead of Germany’s 2027 state elections AfD has repeatedly taken positions favorable to Moscow, including opposing military support for Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. German officials have also raised concerns that AfD lawmakers sought sensitive information on critical infrastructure that could potentially benefit Russia.

Weidel described Trump’s approach to Russian energy supplies as “the right path” and “very pragmatic.”
“He has pulled out, he is concluding diesel deals for his consumers, for American consumers, while we are being left behind here,” she stated.
Ariva.de reported that Weidel also described Germany’s policy toward Ukraine as having failed.
Germany will hold five state elections in 2027: Schleswig-Holstein and Saarland on April 18, North Rhine-Westphalia on April 25, Bremen on May 30, and Lower Saxony on September 26, Germany’s Federal Returning Officer reported.
The AfD is entering that election cycle with strong national polling numbers, reaching 30% in an INSA survey published on October 13, while other recent polls have placed the party between 26% and 30%, according to Wahlrecht.de.

Her comments followed Trump’s announcement after a conversation with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, that more than 300,000 tonnes of Russian diesel would be made available “immediately” for the US and global markets.
The agreement has drawn criticism from the EU, ariva.de noted.
The outlet also reported that Trump called for a new Ukrainian president and claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had repeatedly passed up opportunities to end the war.
However, Russia recently rejected Zelenskyy’s proposal for a 60-day ceasefire that would allow Ukraine to hold presidential elections. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow was not interested in a temporary pause in fighting.
