Group of 14 Bipartisan US Senators Urge Trump to Block Putin From G20 Summit in Miami

A bipartisan group of 14 US senators sent a letter calling on President Donald Trump to rescind his invitation to Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the upcoming G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, as reported by The Washington Post.

The initiative was spearheaded by Republican Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the lead Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, alongside six other Democrats and six other Republicans.

"Putin alone bears responsibility for Russia’s full-scale aggressive war against Ukraine. Allowing his participation in the G20 summit in the United States raises serious concerns about legitimizing and normalizing a government that continues to launch daily strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine every day," the senators stated in the letter, according to The Washington Post.

The lawmakers also highlighted that Putin, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and other members of the Russian delegation remain under US sanctions for actions Washington considers a threat to national security.

According to the signatories, failing to isolate Putin from the international community leaves him with far less motivation to end Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Washington Post noted that Siluanov’s previous attendance at a G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, last month drew sharp pushback from several nations.

European Union representatives specifically requested that the Russian minister be excluded from the official group photograph.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously announced that the United States had formally invited Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami.

Speaking after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Rubio expressed hope that Putin would attend, noting the summit could provide an opportunity for talks with US President Donald Trump and other global leaders.

Rubio also highlighted that Washington was open to playing a constructive role in facilitating a limited ceasefire involving energy and grain, stating that while such a step would not solve Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it could help alleviate broader global pressures.
