Hungary Expels 10 Russian Diplomats Over “Unacceptable” Activities

Hungary has ordered the expulsion of 10 members of the Russian mission in Budapest over activities deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán announced.
Orbán said that the individuals had engaged in activities in Hungary that were “unacceptable for diplomats” under the Vienna Convention.

A representative of Hungary’s Foreign Ministry informed the Russian ambassador in Budapest that the individuals had been ordered to leave the country.
Orbán stressed, however, that the expulsions do not amount to a severing of diplomatic relations between Hungary and Russia.
“This decision protects Hungary’s security and sovereignty. It does not imply breaking off diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue, based on mutual respect and adherence to the rules,” Orbán wrote.

The expulsions come as Hungary’s new government takes a tougher stance toward Moscow. In August, Budapest officially identified Russia as a security threat while reaffirming its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The position was outlined in instructions for Hungary’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in September. The document, signed by Prime Minister Péter Magyar and published in Hungary’s official gazette on August 26, stated that Russia’s actions pose a threat not only to Hungary but also to Europe and the broader international order, according to Der Spiegel.

“Hungary condemns Russian military aggression and fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders,” the document states. “Russia’s behavior poses a threat to Hungary, Europe, and the global order.”
The shift in Budapest’s approach has also extended to scrutiny of the previous government’s relations with Moscow. Hungary’s new government opened an investigation into former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó over alleged ties to Russia.
