Massive Military Buildup Near Ukrainian Border Announced by Polish Defense Chief

Polish authorities are expanding military formations across the Lublin Voivodeship , including deploying a Patriot air defense battery to the region for the first time.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the plans, which focus on expanding the 18th Mechanized Division, the Aviation Academy in Deblin, and the air base in Swidnik, according to Polskie Radio Lublin.

Key organizational shifts include the establishment of the new 18th Motorized Brigade under the 18th Mechanized Division. Command headquarters will be stationed across the Opole Lubelskie and Poniatowa areas.
Additionally, a battalion from this brigade and specialized air defense units will be based in Bilgoraj, while Lukow is slated to host a dedicated uncrewed systems brigade focused on drone operations.
Infrastructure investments are set to expand near Krasnik, where Abrams tanks are stationed, alongside a multi-hectare land transfer in Sobieszyn to grow the Deblin Aviation Academy.

Authorities are also preparing the Swidnik airfield for its role as an Army Aviation helicopter base, timed ahead of expected AH-64E Apache deliveries starting in 2028.
To further reinforce Ukraine’s air defense, the European Union has recently approved $7.1 billion under the Ukraine Support Loan, explicitly clearing the way for Kyiv to procure American PAC-3 missiles for its Patriot systems via NATO mechanisms.
Announced by EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius, the package includes special exemptions allowing Ukraine to acquire critical US interceptors alongside domestic long-range drones, missiles, and potential Gripen fighter jets.
