NATO Weighs Nuclear Expansion as Poland, Finland, Lithuania Emerge as Options

NATO is currently examining options to position additional American nuclear capabilities across Europe as a response to threats posed by Russia.

Poland, Finland, and Lithuania are under consideration as potential host countries, according to Süddeutschen Zeitung on July 31.

The discussions include Poland aiming to join the Nuclear Sharing  program, Finland lifting its long-standing prohibition on nuclear weapons transit and import, and the Lithuanian parliament reviewing legislation to remove its constitutional ban on nuclear deployments.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that discussions are underway regarding potential adjustments to the alliance's nuclear stance, though details remain confidential.

Meanwhile, American nuclear weapons expert Robert Peters indicated that the United States might expand its nuclear presence in Europe within the next 24 months. He suggested that adding 100 to 150 non-strategic nuclear munitions could be an appropriate step, potentially requiring new storage infrastructure in Poland and Finland.

Conversely, former NATO director of nuclear policy Jim Stokes stated that moving American nuclear assets closer to Russian borders is not necessary from a military standpoint, as existing missions can be executed effectively from bases in Western Europe.

Norway recently signed an agreement to join France’s “nuclear umbrella,” with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre citing Russia’s military rearmament as the catalyst.

The move makes Norway the ninth country to align with France’s forward deterrence framework, following similar overtures from Sweden and Denmark, as European allies solidify a backup plan in case US military support wavers.
