During the discussion, Putin proposed a "truce for the period of Victory Day," which is observed on May 9 in Russia. According to Russian officials, President Trump expressed support for this proposal. Ushakov also stated that Putin "condemned the recent attempted assassination" of the US President, offering words of support.

In the Kremlin’s account of the call, Trump reportedly stated that a deal to end the war "is already close." Meanwhile, Putin used the conversation to repeat claims of "terrorist methods" being used in Ukrainian attacks and insisted that the "goals of the 'special military operation ' will be achieved." Despite this, the Russian side indicated a preference for reaching these goals through negotiations.

The Russian leader also offered birthday greetings to First Lady Melania Trump, allegedly praising her role in the "reunification of Russian and Ukrainian children with families." This comment follows an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in The Hague for Putin related to the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.

Additionally, the two leaders spoke about potential "mutually beneficial projects in the economy and energy" sectors, according to Russian state media reports.

These topics have remained a consistent point of contact between the two heads of state in recent months. During a press briefing on March 10, 2026, US President Donald Trump shared details regarding his phone conversation with Vladimir Putin from the previous day, which he described as a productive and positive exchange.

The two leaders discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, where Putin reportedly expressed a desire to be helpful; however, Trump emphasized that a more significant contribution would be for Putin to end Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Trump further remarked on the deep-seated animosity between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, noting that the struggle appeared endless as both sides had struggled to reach an agreement.
