Romania Issues Second Air Alert in Single Day Over Aerial Targets Near Ukraine

Authorities in Tulcea County, Romania, located along the border with Ukraine, issued air raid warnings twice on July 27, due to the risk of falling airborne objects.
According to reports from Digi24 citing the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the afternoon warning was triggered by a "group of aerial targets" moving near the Ukrainian-Romanian border.

The alert began at 16:00 local time and was canceled at 16:46, with officials confirming that no aircraft entered or crashed in Romanian airspace.
Earlier that same morning at 08:53, two F-16 fighter jets scrambled from the 86th Air Base in Fetești after radar detected an aerial object east of Sulina, marking the second such event in the region since the start of the day before the target eventually exited the area.
These developments follow a statement made on July 26, by Romanian President Nicușor Dan regarding a third drone downing in three days over national territory.
According to an investigation by the General Prosecutor's Office, the drone downed on July 25, was identified as a "Shahed" type used by Russia.

In response to repeated instances of drones entering its airspace, Romania decided to recall its ambassador to Russia for consultations and expel a Russian diplomat from the country.
Romania spent approximately $1.7 million over three days to shoot down three Russian drones that entered its airspace, using F-16 fighters that fired three AIM-9X missiles valued at around $400,000 each.
Although protecting civilians remained the top priority regardless of expense, defense officials acknowledged that using such costly interceptors against cheap unmanned aerial vehicles was difficult to sustain long-term.
As a result, the country planned to deploy dedicated counter-drone systems by 2027 to lower operational costs, drawing inspiration from cheaper interceptor technologies like those developed in Ukraine.
