Russia and Germany’s AfD Prepare Potential 2027 Meeting on Restoring Nord Stream Gas

Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s economic envoy and the leadership of Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) party are preparing for a potential meeting in early 2027 to discuss restarting Russian gas supplies, Reuters reported on September 18.

The summit, tentatively scheduled for March, is expected to include Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, alongside AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla. The talks are contingent on a preliminary peace framework between Russia and Ukraine, with organizers proposing Israel, the United Arab Emirates, or India as potential venues.

Organizers also hope to involve US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in discussions regarding the reopening of the Nord Stream pipelines, which were sabotaged in September 2022 . However, US officials stated that neither Witkoff nor Kushner has been informed or invited to the proposed meeting, Reuters wrote.

Before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia supplied more than half of Germany’s natural gas and over a third of its crude oil imports. The AfD advocates ending the boycott on Russian energy, with Weidel describing cheap Russian energy as “the secret of the success of 'Made in Germany'”.

Reuters noted that the proposed meeting has drawn sharp criticism from mainstream German politicians. Green Party lawmaker Michael Kellner, who managed German energy policy during the initial cut-off, warned against resuming dependence on Moscow.

“We cannot repeat the mistakes of the energy crisis,” Kellner said. “It cost us €50 billion [$55.7 billion]. We cannot want to go back to that. It would be treason. Putin is using the AfD to his own ends”.

Roderich Kiesewetter, a parliament member from the Christian Democrats, argued the AfD is acting against national interests, according to Reuters.

“The AfD is on Russia’s side, willing to betray both the Ukraine and Germany,” Kiesewetter stated.

“Russia uses energy, especially Nord Stream, as a hybrid weapon for military purposes. Reopening Nord Stream would be a disaster for European security and isolate Germany,” she continued.

While the AfD does not currently govern at the federal level, it remains highly popular among German voters, particularly in eastern states.

This engagement mirrors wider coordination between Moscow and the AfD, as an adviser to Vladimir Putin recently invited AfD Bundestag members Markus Frohnmaier and Steffen Kotré to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum to foster “pragmatic cooperation.”
