Russia Shifts Strategy to Direct Sabotage Against Danish Suppliers Fueling Ukraine’s Defense

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) has announced that Russia has launched sabotage operations aimed at Danish companies supplying goods to Ukraine, as reported by Reuters.
Speaking at an internal security conference in Copenhagen, lead analyst Josefine Christensen stated that this shift reflects a major escalation in Moscow’s ongoing hybrid warfare strategy.

The intelligence service noted that while significant planning was observed in the spring, actual execution was minimal until early summer, when operational activity increased substantially.
According to Christensen, Russian officials concluded that their earlier large-scale attacks had failed to deter Western NATO member states from supporting Ukraine during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reported.
Moscow maintains political oversight over these missions, though operational boldness continues to grow. PET noted that Russian operations are now focused on hitting targets that directly affect the front line, specifically targeting weapons manufacturing.
To carry out these actions, Russia is increasingly hiring untrained local operatives, including individuals experiencing homelessness or substance abuse issues, through Telegram and other online platforms.

Recruitment often starts with minor assignments such as surveillance or photography before expanding into active sabotage. Christensen noted that recruiters seek anyone looking for quick money, adding that if one individual fails, another is quickly assigned until the objective is completed.
Earlier, in June 2026, a Russian corvette intercepted a Danish unmanned sea drone during trials southeast of Bornholm, approaching within about 200 meters before launching a reconnaissance drone to inspect the vessel at close range.
