Russian Warship Known for Escorting Shadow Fleet Tankers Intercepts Danish Sea Drone

A Russian corvette operating with a disabled position transponder intercepted a Danish unmanned sea drone testing advanced radar capabilities southeast of Bornholm, TV2 reported on July 11.
The ship shadowed the vessel and launched an aerial drone to inspect it from a distance of just a few feet.

The incident took place on June 25, approximately 30 kilometers off the coast of Bornholm, where Danish defense startup Stormborn was conducting sea trials for its “Stormborn Xwave” unmanned surface vessel. TV2 reported that the marine drone was equipped with radar and sonar systems from defense manufacturers Terma and Mydefence when the Russian Steregushchiy-class corvette Soobrazitelny (hull number 531) closed in to a distance of approximately 200 meters in an area known for sparse Danish coastal radar coverage.

The Corvette has been previously seen on several occasions escorting ships from the Russian shadow fleet.
While maintaining its position alongside the anchored Danish drone, the Russian warship launched a small reconnaissance drone that circled directly above the test vessel to examine its sensor suite, according to operator Simon Hviid’s statements obtained by TV2.

“It was a wild experience. All of a sudden it was just there,” Hviid said, noting that “the Russians set the course directly towards us” as the drone’s military radar signals drew their attention.

Stormborn CEO Frederik Søndergaard Hansen confirmed that the incident represents the first time a Russian surveillance operation of this nature has been documented in high resolution so close to Danish territory, adding that all radar logs, sensor data, and video footage were immediately handed over to the Danish Navy’s maritime surveillance operations.
“I would say that this is the first time that it has succeeded in image documenting a drone so close to Danish territory,” Hansen said, adding, “We lay down there to monitor an area that the Danish Defence has a hard time keeping an eye on.”
The encounter reflects growing naval tensions in the Baltic Sea, where Russian warships increasingly shadow Western vessels and escort shadow fleet oil tankers seeking to circumvent international price caps.
Earlier, the same Russian corvette had drawn attention when it confronted Greenpeace activists near a Russian-linked oil tanker in nearby waters.
