Suspected Explosive Drone Found Beside Ukraine’s Antonov An-124 at Leipzig Airport

A drone rigged with a suspected explosive charge was discovered beside a Ukrainian An-124 cargo aircraft at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport during the night of August 5, prompting a possible sabotage investigation.
The discovery was reported by the German newspaper Bild on August 5.

According to Bild, the device lay directly next to the Ukrainian Antonov freighter on the airport apron shortly before midnight.
Police stated that an "unknown substance" fitted with a detonator was attached to the drone, and investigators classified it as a possible explosive charge. The media outlets NDR, WDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung indicated that the object was most likely a modified drone.
The Federal Police deployed bomb-disposal specialists and a remote-controlled robot to carry out a controlled detonation of the suspicious mass, though whether the charge was destroyed remained unclear.
An airport spokeswoman told Bild that the cargo zone is physically separated from the apron used by passenger aircraft.
Bild also noted that one freighter forced to abort its departure collided with an unknown object roughly six kilometers from the airport at an altitude of 400 meters. That aircraft landed safely in Hannover, where crews found minor damage to its nose section.
Police in Lower Saxony classified the incident as a state security offense and did not exclude a sabotage attack. Investigators in both Lower Saxony and Saxony are pursuing the case, while the search for the drone operator has so far produced no results.
The airport's southern runway remained closed, and several inbound flights were diverted to other airports.
The episode fits a broader pattern of sabotage, arson, and covert operations attributed to Russia across Europe in recent years. That campaign has increasingly turned warehouses, railways, and transport infrastructure tied to Western military aid into targets, with assessments concluding it is intended to erode the public and political support that keeps weapons flowing to Kyiv.
