The drone, the third reportedly linked to the incident, was found in a field near the airport in the municipality of Kabelsketal on the evening of August 14, ten days after the first drone was discovered, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung on August 25.

Investigators examining the site detected a substance that, according to preliminary assessments, could have been traces of an explosive mixture containing RDX, a powerful military-grade explosive.

The discovery comes amid growing concerns in Germany over drone-related security threats. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said recent incidents indicate that the country is increasingly becoming a target of hybrid operations and that Berlin intends to strengthen its response.

According to Ukrinform on August 25, Merz said the events of recent weeks had heightened public concern over security threats, pointing to the August 4 incident at Leipzig Airport as evidence that hybrid actors are increasingly willing to risk significant property damage, injuries, and even loss of life. Despite the heightened threat, he stressed that Germany remains a safe country overall.

The latest discovery follows an earlier incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport involving a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. A drone believed to have been fitted with an explosive device was found near a Ukrainian An-124 transport plane overnight on August 5.

According to German newspaper Bild, the drone was discovered on the airport apron shortly before midnight, directly beside the Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.
