Wives and family members of high-ranking Russian officials have initiated new legal proceedings at the European Court of Justice to challenge sanctions imposed by the European Union.

These legal filings target the restrictive measures currently in place against those linked to the Russian state, including spouses and relatives of high-ranking figures, according to The Moscow Times on May 28.

Among the latest cases registered is a challenge filed by Yekaterina Ignatova, the wife of Sergey Chemezov, who serves as the head of the state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec.

Both Yekaterina and her stepdaughter, Anastasia Ignatova, are currently included in the European Union’s sanctions list. According to the most recent financial declarations, the annual income of Chemezov’s wife reached approximately $24 million.

Documents reveal that Anastasia Ignatova controls assets through various offshore structures valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, which includes an 85-meter yacht named Valerie, valued at roughly $140 million.

Tatiana Navka, a former Olympic champion and the wife of Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, has also formally challenged the restrictions leveled against her. The European Union added Navka to its sanctions list in June 2022 as part of the bloc’s sixth package of measures.

At the time of the decision, the Council of the European Union stated that she was linked to real estate properties located in Crimea and to individuals providing support for actions that threaten the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Separately, singer Polina Gagarina has filed an appeal with the European Court of Justice. Her legal team initially submitted an appeal in September 2024.

In their defense arguments, the lawyers claim that the Council of the European Union failed to provide sufficient evidence that the artist meets the criteria of being a “person financially supporting high-ranking officials.”

Gagarina further asserts that the sanctions imposed against her constitute a violation of her rights regarding freedom of expression and creative professional activities.

The European Union is intensifying its efforts to undermine Russia’s ability to finance its full-scale invasion of Ukraine through a combination of new, robust sanctions packages and targeted legal scrutiny of the assets held by the Kremlin elite.

Previously, the European Union prepared a 21st sanctions package that aimed to cripple Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers, banks, and military-industrial companies.

These new measures were designed to choke off the Kremlin’s primary revenue streams by targeting financial institutions and firms that sold stolen Ukrainian grain.
