Russian Military Aircraft Breaches Finnish Airspace, Forcing NATO Fighter Response

A Russian military aircraft is suspected of violating Finnish airspace over the Gulf of Finland, prompting an immediate response from Finland’s Air Force, the Finnish Defense Ministry reported on May 27.
According to the ministry, the incident took place in the afternoon near Porkkala, off Finland’s southern coast. Finnish aircraft were launched in response to the suspected airspace violation.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said an investigation was opened immediately after the incident.
“A Russian military aircraft is suspected of violating Finnish airspace while avoiding a thunderstorm over the Gulf of Finland off Porkkala on the afternoon of May 27, 2026,” the ministry said.

“The Air Force responded to the incident with an operational flight,” the statement added.
“The investigation into the suspected airspace violation was launched immediately,” Häkkänen said.
Finland’s Border Guard is now investigating the case and said it will release more detailed information as the investigation progresses.

The type of Russian aircraft involved has not yet been disclosed. Finnish officials said only that the aircraft was “avoiding a thunderstorm,” but did not provide further details about the circumstances of the flight.
The incident comes amid heightened concern over Russian military activity near NATO airspace, particularly along the Alliance’s northern and eastern flanks.
Earlier, a Russian fighter jet came within just six meters of the nose of a British military surveillance aircraft during a dangerous intercept over the Black Sea.
