Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying over international waters in the Baltic Sea, Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on May 13.
The Polish defense chief condemned the maneuver as a deliberate provocation by Moscow. “This is another aggressive action by the Russian Federation and a testing of our air defense systems,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated.

According to the minister, the Russian military aircraft was operating in stealth. Kosiniak-Kamysz warned that “flights without active transponders can pose a threat to other aircraft.”
The incident underscores the military tensions between NATO member states and Russia along the alliance’s eastern flank. Reassuring the public of the military’s readiness, the defense minister issued a stern warning to Moscow.

“Any provocation of this kind will meet with an immediate response from our pilots,” Kosiniak-Kamysz added.
The interception over the Baltic Sea aligns with a pattern of Russian aerial incursions testing the borders of neighboring European nations. Just recently, a Russian drone violated Moldovan airspace during a massive bombardment of Ukraine, forcing authorities to temporarily restrict national airspace across northern and central Moldova.
The unmanned aerial vehicle crossed the border from Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region, traversing deep into Moldovan territory before disappearing from radar near Giurgiulesti, a port village bordering NATO-member Romania.
