Polish authorities have opened an investigation after the wreckage of a Russian reconnaissance drone was discovered in a rapeseed field near the country’s border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region, Militarnyi reported on May 11.

The unmanned aircraft was located on the morning of May 8 near the village of Osieka in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Osieka is roughly 20 kilometers from Poland’s border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region and about 90–100 kilometers by road from the city of Kaliningrad.

Prosecutors in Olsztyn said investigators believe the drone illegally crossed into Polish airspace from Russia’s Kaliningrad region. Polish media reported that the aircraft bore Russian-language inscriptions and was fitted with cameras.

Sappers, firefighters, and military gendarmerie deployed to the site after the wreckage was found. An initial inspection confirmed that the drone was not armed and posed no explosive threat. The specific model has not yet been disclosed.

Olsztyn prosecutor Daniel Brodowski said the investigation is focused on the illegal crossing of Poland’s state border by an unmanned aerial vehicle. Authorities have not reported any injuries or damage linked to the incident.

Polish Deputy Interior Minister Wiesław Szczepański said the drone entered Polish territory at high speed and landed almost immediately after crossing the border, leaving no realistic chance for interception.

The case adds to growing concern in Poland over spillover from Russia’s drone campaign against Ukraine and repeated violations of NATO airspace.

In September 2025, several Russian drones entered Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine, prompting Poland and the Netherlands to scramble fighter jets. Polish authorities later reported finding more than 20 drone wreckage sites across the country.

The Osieka discovery fits a wider pattern of Russian drone and aerial incidents along NATO’s eastern flank, where allied states have repeatedly faced unmanned incursions, suspected reconnaissance flights, and hybrid pressure from the Baltic states to the Black Sea.

Finnish authorities reported several unidentified aerial objects entering the country's airspace on March 29, prompting fighter jets to scramble without receiving orders to engage. Two drones crashed near Kouvola, about 50 kilometers from the Russian border, while another fell near Espoo. Officials confirmed no injuries or major damage.

Ukrainian officials stated that the drone was not directed toward Finland and was most likely diverted by Russian electronic warfare, which interfered with its route during the operation.

Kyiv apologized to Helsinki after the incident and stressed that Ukraine does not target Finnish territory or civilian areas.
