Zelenskyy Urges Stronger Allied Cooperation Following Black Sea Drone Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed in a post on his official Telegram channel on October 6 that a combined strike using sea and air drones targeted two commercial vessels off the coast of Bulgaria.

Ukrainian naval forces have already established contact with their Bulgarian counterparts regarding the incident.

President Zelenskyy instructed the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense, intelligence agencies, and all relevant services to “interact as fully as possible with our partners so that they and we have more opportunities to defend ourselves.”

Local news outlets in Bulgaria report that a search and rescue operation is currently underway for the crew of a sunken grain-carrying vessel operating under the flag of Palau.

On October 6, Two commercial vessels were struck by drones in Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone in the Black Sea, resulting in at least two fatalities and a major search and rescue operation.

The attack occurred approximately 80 miles off the Bulgarian coast, east of Cape St. Atanas, where the Togo-flagged cargo ship ALFA WATAN sustained severe damage before sinking, while the Palau-flagged vessel ABLE caught fire and forced its 18 crew members to evacuate.

Romanian and Bulgarian rescue teams coordinated efforts, rescuing 11 people from the sunken vessel and utilizing a passenger ferry to transport the remaining evacuated crew members, several of whom received emergency medical care for their injuries.
