Paul McCartney has contributed a lyric from his 1973 song Band on the Run to inspire a charity art exhibition and auction featuring original works by more than 60 contemporary artists, with proceeds supporting children affected by armed conflicts, including those in Ukraine.

According to The Art Newspaper on October 8, the former Beatles musician selected the line “Well the rain exploded with a mighty crash as we fell into the sun” from the song Band on the Run of the 1973 album by McCartney and Wings.

Participating artists, including Genieve Figgis, Alvaro Barrington, and Joshua Donkor, have been invited to create original artworks inspired by the lyric.

The works will be presented as part of the third edition of Sound & Vision, an annual charity exhibition and auction organized by War Child UK in collaboration with arts organization AOAP Projects.

The exhibition will take place at London's Iconic Images Gallery from November 6 to 8, while an online auction will run from October 27 through November 12.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to Paul McCartney for donating his lyric from Band on the Run,” said Charlotte Nimmo, War Child UK’s fundraising engagement director.

“It’s also wonderful to see that yet again, some of the most exciting names in the visual arts space have been inspired by his music to create new work, raising vital funds to support War Child’s work in some of the most dangerous parts of the world.”

The exhibition's curator and founder of AOAP Projects Gemma Peppé said participating artists “have had a lot of fun” interpreting McCartney's lyrics through their work.

Funds raised through the auction will support War Child UK's humanitarian programs, including specialized mental health services, education, child protection, and emergency assistance.

The organization operates in areas affected by ongoing armed conflicts, including Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza, providing assistance to children whose lives have been disrupted by war.

Separately, American singer Chappell Roan has partnered with MAC Cosmetics to launch a new lip makeup collection, with proceeds going toward humanitarian relief efforts, including support for people affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.
