Ukraine has extended the reach of two of its long-range strike drones, with an upgraded AN-196 RS Liutyi capable of flying up to 2,500 kilometers and Fire Point’s redesigned FP-6 potentially reaching as far as 3,400 kilometers, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on October 9.

Zelenskyy said that the modified Liutyi was used in the strike on the oil refinery in Ukhta, a city deep inside Russia. Militarnyi reported that the increase in range may have been achieved through larger fuel tanks, aerodynamic improvements, or a combination of both.

Ukrainian defense media outlet Militarnyi noted that the Liutyi has become one of Ukraine’s better-known domestically produced long-range strike UAVs, and the latest modification would significantly expand the number of targets it can reach without relying on foreign-made long-range weapons.

Militarnyi also reported new details about another Ukrainian deep-strike platform. The upgraded version of Fire Point’s FP-1, which was used to strike the Omsk oil refinery shortly beforehand, has now been redesignated FP-6.

According to Militarnyi, Ukrainian forces first used the updated drone in July 2026. The most visible change is a new trapezoidal wing with a straight leading edge and a trailing edge that tapers toward the tips.

At cruising speed, that geometry reduces aerodynamic drag and improves the distribution of lift across the wing, helping lower fuel consumption and extend flight range.

Integrating fuel storage directly into the wing gives the aircraft additional capacity without sacrificing as much internal space, allowing it to fly farther while retaining a heavier warhead.

According to Militarnyi, that configuration could give the FP-6 a maximum range of up to 3,400 kilometers.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukraine launched what Russia described as the largest combined drone and missile strike of the war, with 1,750 fixed-wing UAVs and 17 Flamingo cruise missiles allegedly used against targets across Russia over the past 24 hours.
