No Tanks, No Troops—Ukraine Sends Its Robot Army Through Kyiv in World-First Drone Parade

Ukraine marked its 35th Independence Day with a radically different kind of military display, sending combat robots down Kyiv’s main street, naval drones across the Dnipro River and UAVs into the skies in what Defence Blog described as the world’s first military parade centered entirely on unmanned systems.
The August 24 demonstration replaced the traditional columns of tanks, armored vehicles and marching troops with some of the technologies that have come to define Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Dozens of unmanned ground vehicles rolled along Khreshchatyk in central Kyiv, showcasing robotic platforms designed for combat, reconnaissance, logistics and other frontline missions.
On the Dnipro River, Ukrainian naval drones including the Magura and Sea Baby were displayed. Both families of unmanned vessels have become closely associated with Ukraine’s campaign against Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

The maritime display included reconnaissance platforms, strike drones and versions equipped with air defense missiles, demonstrating how Ukraine has expanded the role of unmanned vessels far beyond their original use as explosive attack craft.
Ukrainian drones also appeared above the capital, including reconnaissance systems, strike UAVs and interceptor drones developed to destroy incoming Russian aerial threats.

The display offered a snapshot of how deeply Ukraine’s military has changed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Drones that initially played mostly supporting roles have evolved into central elements of Ukrainian operations on land, at sea and in the air. Kyiv has since institutionalized that transformation by creating the Unmanned Systems Forces as a dedicated branch of its military.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed legislation establishing the branch in 2024, making Ukraine the first country to build a separate military service specifically around unmanned warfare. June 11 has since been designated as the annual Day of the Unmanned Systems Forces.
The Independence Day demonstration brought many of those technologies together in the center of the Ukrainian capital.
Ukraine had not staged a conventional military parade during the full-scale war. In previous years, Khreshchatyk instead became known for displays of destroyed Russian tanks, armored vehicles and other equipment captured or knocked out during fighting.
Previously, reports emerged that Ukraine is expanding its fleet of unmanned ground vehicles, aiming to produce at least 50,000 combat and logistics robots this year to reinforce infantry units and bridge manpower shortages along the frontline.
