40 Lancets, Zero Impact? Ukraine Says Russia Staged a Drone Spectacle

Russia may have launched up to 40 Lancet loitering munitions toward Kyiv in what Ukrainian officials describe as a staged operation designed to generate visual impact rather than cause real damage, according to Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s Defense Minister, on March 17.
He said the strike appeared to be part of an information campaign aimed at demonstrating results to domestic audiences in Russia.

According to him, the operation combined Lancet drones with Shahed-type drones to ensure that debris from the attack would be visible in the Ukrainian capital.
He argued that the effort reflects growing pressure on Russian officials to show tangible results as Ukrainian air defenses continue to improve.

Beskrestnov said the Lancet system is not designed for long-range strikes, with a typical operational range of 30 to 80 kilometers. To extend that range, he claimed, Russian operators removed the warheads and replaced them with additional batteries.
This allowed a small number of drones to reach Kyiv, though they were unable to inflict meaningful damage.
According to his account, only a handful of drones made it to the city, and their impact was largely symbolic.

He also suggested that the operation may have been intended to revive interest in the Lancet system within Russia’s defense sector, as demand for the platform has reportedly declined.
Launching such a large number of drones for a non-critical objective represents a significant use of resources, he added, noting that the same systems could have been used more effectively on the battlefield.
Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted most of the incoming drones, while the incident provided additional opportunities to refine detection and counter-drone tactics.

Beskrestnov said the operation also allowed Ukrainian specialists to study the electronics of downed systems, potentially improving future countermeasures.
The claims could not be independently verified, but they underscore the growing role of perception-driven operations alongside conventional strikes in the war.
Earlier reports indicated that Ukraine was increasingly shifting the battlefield onto Russian territory, with air raid alerts now sounding across much of the country and drone activity intensifying near Moscow.
