447 Russian Chemical Munitions Attacks Reported Against Ukrainian Troops in August
Russian forces continue to use specialized munitions filled with dangerous chemical agents against Ukrainian troops, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
It was reported that last month alone saw 447 instances of Russian forces using chemical munitions against Ukrainian troops. From February 15, 2023, to August 24 of the current year, there have been a total of 4,035 such cases.
The General Staff explained that the use of chemical munitions occurs alongside conventional firepower. “The adversary is employing K-51 and RG-VO substances for chemical attacks. These are riot control agents and are prohibited for use in warfare,” the report stated.
The General Staff also noted that a significant portion of Russian munitions contains dangerous chemical compounds of an unidentified type.
"Russia is flagrantly violating the rules of warfare and disregarding the norms and obligations of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and mandates their destruction," the statement reads.
Since 2014, following the occupation of Crimea and parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Russia has been repeatedly accused of using chemical agents against Ukrainian military personnel and civilians. One example was the use of tear gas during attacks on Ukrainian positions.
With the onset of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, instances of Russian chemical attacks have become more severe.
