Russia’s Defense Ministry has closed the airspace over the Kapustin Yar missile test range in the Astrakhan region from August 5 to August 9.

The restriction was confirmed in a NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) published by the US Federal Aviation Administration, according to The Moscow Times on August 5.

The area, known for being used by Russia to test intercontinental ballistic missiles, will be completely off-limits to air traffic for five days. The closure coincides with a political shift: Russia has declared it no longer considers itself bound by the restrictions of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

According to The Moscow Times, citing a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Moscow is abandoning its self-imposed ban on deploying ground-based intermediate- and shorter-range missiles in response to the West’s “destabilizing missile capabilities” near Russia’s borders.

The Kremlin suggested that military steps could be forthcoming, noting that “decisions on the exact parameters of response measures will depend on the development of the international security and strategic stability landscape.”

Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, who had remained silent for several days following another warning from Donald Trump, commented on the situation via X on August 4.

“This is a new reality all our opponents will have to reckon with. Expect further steps,” he wrote

Earlier, it was reported that, for the first time, China deployed a submarine to Russia as part of the Joint Sea 2025 naval exercises, signaling deepening military cooperation between the two countries. The Chinese flotilla included a Russian-built Kilo-class diesel-electric submarine—marking the first-ever docking of a Chinese submarine in Russia for such drills.
