German military authorities have reported an incident involving three unidentified drones suspected of conducting reconnaissance near air defense systems designed to intercept long-range missile threats, according to Deutsche Welle on January 7.

The incident occurred on December 1, 2025, above the Annaburg air base in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, though it was disclosed publicly only weeks later.

According to the Bundeswehr, the drones were observed flying at an altitude of roughly 100 meters over the military facility.

A rapid-reaction unit launched a combat drone in an attempt to intercept the intruding aircraft. While German forces managed to visually identify at least one of the drones, they were unable to neutralize it before it departed the area.

Military officials believe the unmanned aircraft were conducting surveillance operations aimed at determining the precise location of Germany’s newly deployed Arrow-3 air and missile defense systems.

Arrow-3 is a high-altitude interceptor jointly developed by Israel and the United States, designed to destroy ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere. Germany recently brought the system into service as part of a broader effort to strengthen defenses against long-range missile threats.

Following the incident, German law enforcement opened a criminal investigation. Authorities have not disclosed who may have been operating the drones, and the inquiry remains ongoing.

Earlier, reports emerged that the first components of a system designed to counter hostile drones had been installed along Poland’s border with Belarus, with the system set to become operational in January next year.
