At Least 124 Ukrainian POWs Executed by Russian Forces, 49 Cases Under Investigation
Ukrainian authorities are investigating 49 criminal cases related to the killing of 124 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces on the battlefield.
Denys Lysenko, head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed within the Office of the Prosecutor General, confirmed the ongoing investigation during a televised interview.
“We are currently analyzing all of these incidents, searching for patterns and trends. We are building cases against senior Russian military officials who may be involved in organizing such crimes or failing to take measures to stop them and punish those responsible. We are looking at these cases comprehensively, and the participation of individual military units is analyzed in each case. However, this does not absolve commanders of responsibility,” Lysenko stated.
The incidents of Ukrainian soldiers being killed during their surrender to Russian forces have increased significantly since the end of last year, reaching unprecedented levels this year. Most of the documented cases have occurred in the Donetsk region.
Lysenko also reported that on October 23, three Ukrainian POWs were killed in the eastern part of the city of Selydove, and on November 1, three more Ukrainian prisoners were executed near the village of Vyshneve in the Selydove territorial community.
Ukrainian law enforcement has launched investigations into the killings of six Ukrainian soldiers by Russian forces in the Pokrovsk direction. Under the procedural leadership of the Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office, pretrial investigations are ongoing into these war crimes, as stipulated by Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
