Australian PM Vows “Toughest Measures” if POW’s Killing Is Confirmed
Australia is prepared to take its “toughest possible measures,” potentially including the expulsion of the Russian ambassador, if reports of the death of Australian citizen Oscar Jenkins are verified.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the matter, according to The Guardian report on January 15.
Jenkins, a Melbourne teacher who volunteered to fight with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was reportedly captured by Russian forces last year. Recent claims of his death have sparked widespread concern in Australia.
Prime Minister Albanese stated that any harm caused to Jenkins would be “completely unacceptable” and called on Moscow to confirm the status of the 32-year-old Australian national.
“We have already summoned the Russian ambassador. We are working to ascertain whether Mr. Jenkins has come to harm, and if this is confirmed, we will take the toughest possible actions,” Albanese said during a press conference in Tasmania.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong reiterated that all options, including the expulsion of Russia’s envoy, remain under consideration.
Jenkins was taken prisoner by Russian forces while fighting in Ukraine. In a video recorded at the time of his capture, he confirmed his name and Australian citizenship.
Under international humanitarian law, specifically the Geneva Conventions, prisoners of war are entitled to humane treatment.
“The Russian Federation is obligated to treat all prisoners of war in accordance with international humanitarian law, including the right to humane treatment and a fair trial,” Wong stated.
The Australian government is conducting urgent investigations to confirm Jenkins’ reported death.
Members of the opposition have urged immediate action if Jenkins’ death is verified. Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley stated, “If Mr. Jenkins was killed, this constitutes a war crime. The government must respond decisively.”
“My thoughts are with Mr. Jenkins’ family, who have endured months of fear and uncertainty due to his participation in the conflict abroad,” Wong added.
Australia awaits an official response from Russia and has signaled its readiness to act based on the findings of its investigation.
