EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has raised concerns regarding the risk posed by political groups that remain blind to the threat from Moscow, following the victory of the far-right Alternative for Germany in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, according to BNS on September 7.
During a press conference in Vilnius alongside Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the EU foreign policy chief warned that sabotage and other hybrid operations are moving closer to European borders.

At the same time, political movements that choose to ignore these developments are building momentum across the continent. Kallas pointed out that parties taking a passive stance and arguing against action are only strengthening their standing.
The diplomat voiced worry over how this shift could compromise Europe’s readiness to counter future hybrid tactics, while clarifying that the regional election outcome in Germany remains an internal national issue.
She noted that Europe risks falling into a situation where defensive measures are insufficient to stop emerging threats, while reiterating that voters in a democratic nation must ultimately decide their own political path.
Earlier, the German government formally accused Russia of conducting a large-scale cyberattack on the country’s air traffic control system and orchestrating a disinformation campaign during recent elections. According to German officials, there was credible evidence of Russian interference aimed at sowing division within society and undermining trust in democratic institutions.
These hostile actions, which included the “Storm 1516” operation and attacks by the Fancy Bear hacking group, led the German Foreign Ministry to summon the Russian ambassador and implement countermeasures against Moscow’s hybrid offensive.
