Kushner Says That New US “Peace Package” Is Built to Go Beyond Stopping Fighting

US envoy Jared Kushner said Washington is working to build a broader “peace package” aimed at securing a durable end to Russia’s war against Ukraine, speaking to UNITED24 Media in Kyiv on September 6.

Kushner made the remarks alongside Steve Witkoff during talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after the US envoys traveled to Kyiv following meetings in Moscow. He stressed that the initiative was intended to go beyond simply stopping the fighting and establish a settlement capable of lasting.

“What President Trump’s task, you know, Steve and I are doing, is really creating a peace package,” Kushner stated. He added that Washington was working closely with European partners and examining what Ukraine, Russia, and the wider international community could gain from a durable settlement.

Witkoff also highlighted the presence of Gene Lang from the US Treasury in the delegation, describing him as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s “right-hand man.” He presented Lang’s participation alongside national security officials as evidence that Washington was taking the renewed negotiations seriously.

During the Kyiv meeting, Zelenskyy also prepared T-shirts bearing the words “Kyiv regime” as gifts for Witkoff and Kushner, presidential spokesperson Serhii Nykyforov stated. Before presenting them, Zelenskyy showed the shirt to the envoys on the Ukrainian negotiating team member, Davyd Arakhamia, a BBC journalist reported from the site.

“Kyiv regime” is a term routinely used by Russian officials and state media to refer to Ukraine’s government while denying or undermining its political legitimacy.

Witkoff stated that US President Donald Trump had asked the pair to travel to Ukraine to restart negotiations. He noted that the delegation felt encouraged by its discussions in Moscow and Kyiv, while Ukrainian officials were preparing military briefings for the talks.

Zelenskyy, meanwhile, warned that winter would remain a major challenge despite Ukraine becoming stronger over the past 10 to 12 months. He identified financing for the military, humanitarian needs, and domestic defense production among the issues requiring attention.
