Belgian authorities have arrested three young adults accused of plotting a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack using drones equipped with explosives, with several political figures—including Prime Minister Bart De Wever—reportedly among the intended targets, according to federal prosecutors.
This was reported by Barron`s on October 9.
The arrests took place in Antwerp as part of an investigation into “attempted terrorist murder and participation in the activities of a terrorist group,” federal prosecutor Ann Fransen said at a press briefing.
“Certain elements indicate that the suspects intended to carry out a jihadist-inspired terrorist attack against political figures,” Fransen stated. “There are also indications that the suspects aimed to construct a drone capable of carrying a payload.”

Belgian media reported that police searched a residence just a few hundred meters from De Wever’s home in Antwerp. During the raid, officers discovered an improvised but incomplete explosive device containing metal pellets.
At another suspect’s residence, authorities found a 3D printer believed to have been used to produce components for the planned attack.
The suspects, born in 2001, 2002, and 2007, were detained on terrorism-related charges. Two remain in custody for questioning by federal police and are expected to appear before an investigating judge, while the third was released.
Earlier, it was reported that Hungarian intelligence operatives are suspected of conducting espionage operations in Brussels for several years, including attempts to recruit officials within European Union institutions.
