Belgian defense authorities are investigating a deliberate drone overflight of a land force brigade headquarters in Marche-en-Famenne, the country’s Minister of Defense Theo Francken said on X on October 29.

The minister wrote that base guards observed multiple drones over important parts of the headquarters for an extended period and judged the operation to be the work of skilled pilots rather than amateurs.

Military procedures were followed, and both the police and the ADIV  domestic intelligence service have opened inquiries. The minister thanked the sentries for their vigilance.

He also warned that flying drones over military quarters is strictly prohibited and said Belgium must be able to shoot such drones down.

Criticising previous procurement choices, he added that the prior government bought “far too few” countermeasures; a procurement file is now ready and the purchases are urgently required.

Previously, Theo Francken warned Moscow that any Russian strike on European cities would trigger “harsh consequences,” telling local press that an attack on Brussels would amount to a strike “in the very heart of NATO” and provoke a devastating response.
