The bodies of 757 fallen soldiers were returned to Ukrainian-controlled territory. This was reported by the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoner of War Affairs on January 24.
The repatriated defenders include 451 from the Donetsk direction, 71 from Bakhmut, 51 from Vuhledar, 13 from Luhansk, and 137 from Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, 34 fallen soldiers were returned from morgues in Russian-occupied territories.
“We express our gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for their support,” Coordination Headquarters wrote.
The repatriations were made possible through the coordinated efforts of Ukraine's security and defense agencies, including the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoner of War Affairs, the Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and other related institutions.
“A special thank you goes to the personnel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who oversee the transport of repatriated fallen heroes to designated state institutions, organize the transfer of the deceased to law enforcement agencies within the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the forensic medical examination system under the Ministry of Health,” Coordination Headquarters wrote.
Law enforcement investigators, together with expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will identify the fallen as soon as possible, they noted.
Previously it was reported that from February 24, 2022, to the end of October 2024, 184 bodies of Ukrainians who died in Russian captivity have been returned to Ukraine. This includes 169 soldiers and 15 civilians, according to the Media Initiative for Human Rights, citing the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
