More than 7,800 commercial vessels have successfully passed through Ukraine’s Black Sea maritime corridor, transporting over 200 million tons of cargo despite a Russian aerial campaign targeting terminal infrastructure, the Association of Ports of Ukraine reported on June 5, 2026.

The grain corridor  remains fully operational despite deliberate Russian attempts to target merchant vessels heading toward domestic ports, ArmyInform reported on June 23.

Speaking during a national television broadcast, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Captain 3rd Rank Dmytro Pletenchuk acknowledged that while guaranteeing absolute safety for commercial shipping against Russian strikes is practically impossible, defensive measures have prevented significantly higher rates of disruption.

“Of course, it is practically impossible to protect merchant ships from Russian strikes one hundred percent,” Pletenchuk stated, adding that “if this work were not maintained, our enemies would have achieved much greater results.”

Pletenchuk emphasized that the current volume of maritime trade is a result of defensive intervention, noting that without the continuous efforts of Ukrainian maritime forces, the Russian military would have achieved far greater success in halting regional commerce.

When Russian strikes against civilian shipping do occur, Ukrainian naval units immediately transition into active emergency response operations. “We naturally immediately move to another stage—this is when we need to provide assistance, evacuate, and we can also join in firefighting and the struggle for survival,” the spokesperson noted.

The hazardous nature of these missions was demonstrated during a recent operation where Ukrainian personnel worked for three consecutive days to extinguish a severe fire aboard a targeted Turkish gas carrier, ArmyInform wrote.

To mitigate persistent security threats in the basin, the military coordinates closely with commercial crews traversing the corridor, the publication noted. Naval units maintain round-the-clock communication lines with the vessels, track their status in real time, and provide security escorts through high-risk waters to preserve the integrity of Ukraine’s economic infrastructure.

Russia had recently struck two civilian search-and-rescue vessels conducting a humanitarian mission within the maritime corridor. The attack damaged both boats and injured several crew members, drawing condemnation for violating Geneva Convention protections regarding maritime rescue operations.

The grain corridor is a protected maritime route established in the Black Sea to allow cargo ships to safely transport agricultural exports—primarily grain, corn, and sunflower oil—from blockaded Ukrainian ports to global markets.
