Canada is prepared to deploy troops as part of an international peacekeeping force being spearheaded by the United Kingdom and France, Defense Minister Bill Blair announced at the annual Conference of Defence Associations Institute in Ottawa, CBC News reported on March 6.

“Canada is ready and able to contribute to these forces,” Blair told reporters after his speech.

“But we also believe it’s crucial to have important discussions about security guarantees for both Ukraine and foreign forces.”

Following an allied meeting in London, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government was “exploring the best ways to help.”

The proposal for a “coalition of the willing” was announced by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer following a public spat between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, details remain unclear regarding which countries will officially join the coalition or what roles they will assume.

Two weeks ago, Starmer said the UK is prepared to deploy troops to help maintain a potential peace in Ukraine. France has also signaled openness to sending its forces, with both nations emphasizing the need for U.S. support for the mission.

The Netherlands, Sweden, and Turkey have also expressed willingness to participate, according to media reports.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron revealed that France and the UK proposed a one-month ceasefire “in the air, on the seas”, as well as a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure, as part of a new peace plan for Ukraine. The proposal, which does not extend to ground combat, was put forward to both Kyiv and Moscow.
