Chechen Authorities Threaten to Label Cryptocurrency Miners as Terrorists
People engaged in illegal cryptocurrency mining in Chechnya will be equated with terrorists, Russian State Duma member and advisor to the head of the Chechen republic, Adam Delimkhanov, announced, according to Russian media outlet Meduza on December 30.
Delimkhanov stated that cases of illegal mining have already been detected in Chechnya, with many allegedly involving individuals employed in various structures.
“Our leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, has asked us to inform all residents that anyone found engaging in such activities, which also cause electricity outages for entire districts, villages, or cities, will face severe punishment. We will classify them as terrorists, as their actions harm society as a whole,” Delimkhanov declared.
The deputy emphasized that illegal mining effectively ‘steals’ electricity from others. Efforts to detect such activities are already underway in Chechnya, but they will be intensified.
Delimkhanov further noted that the Shali district will receive special attention, as the issue of illegal cryptocurrency mining remains particularly pressing there.
Earlier, Russian companies started using Bitcoin and other digital currencies for international transactions.
