China’s Envoy Calls for Inclusive Ukraine Peace Talks, Criticizes Trump’s Approach to Europe

China’s special representative for European affairs, Lu Shaye, expressed surprise at U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach toward America’s European allies, stating that a peace deal for Ukraine should not be dictated solely by the United States and Russia. This was reported by South China Morning Post on March 6.
Speaking on the sidelines of a panel discussion during the annual session of China’s top political advisory body, Lu responded to Trump’s recent remarks, particularly his pressure on Europe regarding security and defense commitments.
“When you look at how the Trump administration has implemented a brazen and domineering policy towards Europe, treating its allies in this way, honestly, from a European perspective, it’s quite appalling,” Lu said.

“I believe European friends should reflect on this and compare the Trump administration’s policies with those of the Chinese government. In doing so, they will see that China’s diplomatic approach emphasises peace, friendship, goodwill and win-win cooperation.”
Lu welcomed renewed U.S.-Russia dialogue under Trump’s administration aimed at ending the war but stressed that any peace process must include the voices of all relevant parties, particularly European nations.
“Various proposed solutions should be subject to equal discussion, rather than being dictated by a select few,” Lu stated.
Previously, China has responded to the new U.S. tariffs by raising import duties by 10–15% on a range of American agricultural and food products, Reuters reported on March 4.
