China has responded to the new U.S. tariffs by raising import duties by 10–15% on a range of American agricultural and food products, Reuters reported on March 4.

Beijing reacted to the U.S. by announcing plans to impose tariffs on U.S. chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, along with levy on U.S. soybeans, sorghum, pork, beef, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, planned to take effect on March 10.

Additionally, Beijing imposed export and investment restrictions on 25 American companies, citing national security concerns.

At a press conference, China’s Foreign Ministry stated that the country has never bowed to coercion or intimidation, warning that “trying to exert extreme pressure on China is a miscalculation and a mistake.”

This measure follows the U.S. President Donald Trump raising tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%, with the new rates taking effect on March 4.

Trump signed the corresponding order to hold Mexico, Canada, and China “accountable for their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.”

“We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA,” Trump wrote, adding that the tariffs would stay imposed “until it stops, or is seriously limited.”

On February 28, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Delivering a message from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, he emphasized Moscow’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation.
