In an interview with French media outlet Paris Match published on December 11, US President-elect Donald Trump declared that Ukraine will be his top international priority when he takes office next month.

“The priority is to resolve the problem of Ukraine with Russia,” Trump said.

“These two countries are suffering incredible human losses. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are killed,” the US President-elect added when asked about his primary focus on the international stage.

While acknowledging the Middle East as a significant concern, Trump suggested it is comparatively less challenging than the war in Ukraine.

“The Middle East is also important, but I think it is a less difficult situation to manage than Ukraine and Russia,” he added.

Trump traveled to Paris on December 7 to attend the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, which had been severely damaged in a 2019 fire. During his visit, he held a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“I just met President Zelenskyy, with whom I had a good discussion,” Trump concluded.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Trump’s commitment to ending the war.

“I reiterate my gratitude to President Macron for organizing it (the meeting of the Presidents), as well as my deep gratitude to President Trump for his strong resolve to bring this war to a fair end,” the Ukrainian President wrote on X.
