Erdoğan Seeks Trump-Putin Summit in Istanbul Amid Renewed Ukraine Peace Push

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has proposed hosting a high-level meeting in Istanbul between former US President Donald Trump and the Russian leader Putin, as part of Ankara’s renewed efforts to mediate the war in Ukraine. This was announced by Republic of Türkiye Directorate of Communications on July 25.
“This week, by holding talks with Putin and Trump, we will strive to see if we can bring these leaders together in Istanbul.” Erdoğan stated.
Earlier, Erdoğan said that Donald Trump was willing to attend a meeting with the Ukrainian and Russian leaders, but only if the Russian leader also participated.

On July 23, another round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia took place in Istanbul. The meeting had been previously announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This round of talks lasted less than an hour. According to Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian delegation, the key topics included a ceasefire, the release of prisoners, and a possible meeting between national leaders aimed at achieving a just peace.
The previous round of Ukrainian-Russian negotiations in Istanbul occurred on June 2. At that time, the two sides agreed on a large-scale prisoner exchange. Following the agreement, several groups of seriously wounded and gravely ill prisoners of war were released, along with military personnel aged 18 to 25.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin suggested Kyiv is stalling peace efforts, while Russia remains open to further talks in Istanbul—echoing Ankara’s ongoing mediation push.
