Estonia Condemns Russian Airspace Violation by Three MiG-31 Jets

Estonia’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires in Tallinn to deliver a formal protest note after three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace on September 19.

According to the ministry, the aircraft crossed into Estonian skies over the Gulf of Finland without authorization and remained there for around 12 minutes.

“Russia has already violated Estonia’s airspace four times this year, which in itself is unacceptable. But today’s incursion, involving three fighter aircraft entering our airspace, is unprecedentedly brazen,” said Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

Officials stressed that the breach represents a serious violation of sovereignty and international law, underscoring growing concerns about Russia’s increasingly aggressive behavior in the Baltic region.

“Russia’s increasingly extensive testing of boundaries and growing aggressiveness must be met with a swift increase in political and economic pressure,” the minister added.

Meanwhile, Estonia has launched unplanned military exercises this week to bolster its readiness against potential airspace violations.

The drills were triggered by recent incidents in which Russian drones breached Polish airspace.

“Dozens of drones crossing into Poland once again highlight the consequences of Russia’s military aggression for neighboring countries,” said Lieutenant General Andrus Merilo, Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces.

Earlier, it was reported that Estonia is moving to enhance security along its eastern border with Russia by preparing to deploy an autonomous robotic vessel. The Police and Border Guard Board will use the high-tech craft to patrol river sections of the frontier.
