Estonia Deploys AI-Powered Robotic Vessel to Strengthen Border Patrol With Russia

Estonia is taking a high-tech step to secure its eastern border with Russia. The country’s Police and Border Guard Board is preparing to deploy an autonomous robotic vessel to patrol river sections along the frontier.
According to Estonia`s national broadcast ERR on July 14, the vessel could be operational within two years. It will be equipped with advanced surveillance systems and powered by artificial intelligence to monitor border activity.
The project is backed by over $1 million in EU funding and is part of a broader innovation initiative supported by Estonia’s Ministry of Finance. A public tender for the vessel’s design and construction is expected to be announced soon.

Among the potential contenders is MindChip, a tech startup founded by Tallinn University of Technology, which specializes in autonomous maritime technologies.
Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte cautioned that Russia could target Estonia within the next five to seven years if the Alliance does not enhance collective defense spending and military readiness.
Speaking to The New York Times, Rutte stressed that while a Russian attack is not imminent, the threat will grow unless NATO strengthens its forces and presence in the region.
